So...curriculum 2014 comes into play in September. Within this curriculum it is fair to say that there is almost NO guidance for PSHE coordinators or teachers.
It states that all schools should have a programme of PSHE. That is it.
But the curriculum states it must be broad and balanced and help young people develop into positive members society.
SRE has been reduced in the science curriculum to almost nothing also.
There are no new POS. So nothing to go on that is new and relevant. The PSHE association has created their own POS which I attach. I am of the thinking that if you have a spiral scheme in school at the moment keep using it. I believe that more guidance on this POS will come and then a new scheme could be created. Dont try to reinvent the wheel, its a long and lonely job and if you are lucky you will get thanked for it! If you need to make tweaking changes eg for cyber bullying or FGM just pick those topics to update.
I attach the guidance the pshe association has published.
Currently the DfE has created expert groups to thrash out bits of the curriculum that need more guidance. I am in the PSHE expert group. The end result of this will be a report of recommendations to all involved in PSHE education. This will help practitioners more.
Personally Im continuing to use our spiral scheme of PSHE and SRE from reception to year 6. It's sticking in place for at least the year 2014-2015.
