I did post this a while back and moved it and couldnt find it again so ill build it up slowly.
New coordinator of pshe? Here are some things you could do with finding out.
Do you follow a scheme in the school? Does everyone follow the same scheme? Do staff like it?
Is pshe given a discrete slot in the timetable? (as opposed to unplanned circle times to sort out behaviour issues, SEAL assemblies and incidental pshe) - find timetables, MTP's, speak to people.
What resources does the school have? Arrange an amnesty of resources so that you can catalogue them and find a central resource space.
What budget do you have? (the office will be able to tell you)
What are the priorities on the action plan, indeed is there an action plan? (HT should have this)
Has any montioring taken place? What were the findings? (should be found in previous coordinators file, if not where is the evidence of any monitoring? Was it displays? work? Planning?)
How does the school assess pshe? (HT should tell you)
Is there a space on the reports for PSHE? (there should be)
What do people write in the space? (get some old reports and have a look, is it reporting specific pshe skills or friendships?)
Does the school record any pshe work? How do they evidence the learning taking place? (is there a book for pshe?)
Are you supposed to coordinate SEAL, children in need events, anti bullying, genes for jeans etc? When and what has been done before?
Are you coordinating healthy schools? What award does the school have already? (HT will know) DO you have a county healthy schools advisor? (google it)
Are you in charge of eco warriors? (do you have them? HT would know)
What are children's perceptions? (create a simple perception survey. Ask for 2 children from each year group and ask them some simple PSHE questions, you will learn a lot about it)
Questions like: Do you do pshe in your class? What is pshe? Do you like pshe? What are you learning about at the moment in pshe? Don you do pshe a lot?
Have informal chats with staff about their thoughts on pshe in the school.
